Which devices help reduce container garden maintenance?

I lead a very busy life and want to have an attractive roof terrace that requires minimal maintenance.

I've heard there are various devices such a self-watering containers and automatic feeders available to help with this. Are there any that you especially recommend? Are there any other handy accessories I can get that will help?

Answer

I love self-watering containers. they have a reservoir in the bottom and the water is transferred to the roots of the plants by capillary action. Gardener's Supply has some very nice ones that are attractive as well as effective.

Just like non-reservoir containers, I find that the larger, the better.

I have not used automatic feeders so cannot advise on those.
